An excellent course for aspiring copywriters
In 2018 I completed the College of Media and Publishing’s Copywriting Diploma.
Why I decided to do a copywriting course
I’d been thinking about doing this type of course for a while. A lot of my translation work involves creative and stylistically challenging texts for the tourism industry. Therefore, I thought that a copywriting course would help me polish my translations.
I also wanted to gain more confidence when it came to writing content for my website. When I was researching courses, a fellow translator recommended the CMP course and it looked like a comprehensive, interesting course.
What the course involved
The course is entirely online and you can take a long as you need to complete it. This second point was important to me because it meant that I could fit it around work and other commitments. The lessons cover everything you need to know about copywriting from copy presentation and terminology to writing headlines, press releases and blogs. Most of the lessons end with an assignment that is marked by an experienced tutor.
What I thought of the course
I’ve had mixed experiences with online courses so I was a bit nervous about starting this one. I needn’t have worried. The lessons were very well prepared and written and covered everything a would-be copywriter might need to know about each topic. The course underlines the need for clear writing with short sentences and jargon-free language as well as the need to use a conversational tone with readers.
The assignments allowed students to fully display their understanding of the subject. My tutor also gave prompt feedback which enabled me to develop my skills as a copywriter.
What I hope to do with my copywriting diploma
Now that I have a copywriting qualification I feel more confident about my writing skills overall. I feel better placed to update my website copy and more able to handle marketing texts in my translation work. I now offer copywriting as one of my services.
I’d strongly recommend the CMP Copywriting Course to English mother-tongue translators and aspiring copywriters who are looking to improve the quality of their writing.
Update (July 2023)
Please note that I took this course five years ago. Unfortunately, it appears to have gone downhill since then. Many of my colleagues who have taken the course since then didn’t find it so beneficial. If you are thinking about taking this type of course, always check the latest reviews.
